Typical Residential Garage Dimensions and How They Can Be Used

Many people use their garages for storing stuff instead of for protecting their cars. When it comes time for building a new garage and a new garage door installation, it is important to consider the typical residential garage dimensions and how different sizes of garages can be used. If you have a woodworking hobby, lots of stuff to store and one or more cars, this information could help you to make a sound decision about what size of garage and garage door to install.

Single-car Garages

Single-car garages typically measure a minimum of 12 feet wide by 22 feet long. For ease of entering and exiting, a 14-foot width is recommended. If you want more room for storage, consider a 1.5-car garage, which would measure 18 feet wide. The extra space could store lawn equipment, bicycles, outdoor toys or a workbench.

Two-car Garages

Two-car garages measure at least 24 feet wide by 24 feet long. This size of a garage is able to accommodate two cars, sport utility vehicles or pickup trucks. If you need additional storage space for gear as well as two vehicles, consider having the garage built to be 30 feet wide by 24 feet long. The extra space will fit bicycles, lawn mowers and outdoor decor.

Three-Car and Specialty Vehicle Garages

When you have three vehicles that you drive regularly, a three-car garage may be what you need. If one of your vehicles is a truck or recreational vehicle, you might need a two-car garage door on one side and a specialty garage door on the other side. The specialty garage door typically requires more height. These garages measure a minimum of 30 feet by 24 feet by 16 feet tall.
